Thieves, robbers target smart phone stores for a bigger payout-PriceAngels

News 4 is tracking a growing crime trend where robbers are targeting victim’s GT-I9300 cell phones.According to St. Louis County authorities, 37-percent of all armed robberies over the last 12 months involved cell phones but now those robbers are setting their sights on the stores themselves.St. Louis County Police Chief Tim Fitch said the 3-man armed and organized robbery team from Chicago locked the door, tied up the workers then raided the vault of over seventy smart phones at the South County AT & T store before taking off. A woman was caught moments later but two male suspects got away.

“I will tell you that this is more lucrative than bank robberies, because they’re getting tens of thousands of dollars worth of cell phones during these robberies,” Chief Fitch added. The high price of smart phones has made them an increasing target of thieves and robbers.Just a few days ago Dwayne Davis was charged with punching a woman in University City in an attempt to steal her cell phone.

Some phone owners are taking precautions as this trend increases. Cell phone apps can trace stolen cell phones and laws can log vital information on sellers to discourage selling stolen cell phones. Chief Fitch says the solution lies with the cell phone makers.“Today, there’s technological fixes for automobiles to keep them from being stolen, they could do the same thing, we believe with cell phones.”

Some are suggesting all cell phones install a kill switch on phones. Chief Fitch said in some east coast cities, phone owners refrain from having their phones out while they are walking down a sidewalk so they don’t get stolen. Your cellphone is your lifeline, your digital boyfriend and these days, a criminal’s source for quick cash.fd3ADSAa23

Roseville Police say 35-year-old John Carter of Sacramento stole two cellphones from a softball complex and tried to cash in by selling them at an EcoATM kiosk at the Sunrise Mall.“They’re going to a kiosk, an unattended kiosk because they think that gives them a little bit more anonymity,” said Det. Sgt. Darin DeFreece of Roseville Police, he says that’s not always the case. “It takes their picture, their thumb print, their identification. They think they have some anonymous way of selling the GT-I9500 cell phone and that’s really not the case.”

EcoATM scans your old phone and makes you an offer, but while the machine is trying to differentiate Droid from iPhone, it’s also scanning you.Ever have to take a call while stargazing, or do you use astronomical apps on your phone, only to have the white screen ruin your night vision? A new app called Sunset is a screen filter that essentially adds a dimmed red-color filter onto an Android device’s screen so you can use your smartphone during those extra dark moments and not lose your dark-adapted night-vision.

British Airways soothes traveler impatience, relaxes phone rules-PriceAngels

For British Airways, apparently important enough to be the first European airline to relax restrictions on using cell phones and other electronic devices while planes are taxiing after landing. The airline has announced that starting July 1, passengers will be able to text, make i9500 S4 phone calls, check emails and play with other electronic devices as soon as arriving aircraft land and taxi off the runway.

For passengers in Europe, the move means no more having to wait until the aircraft arrives at the terminal before shrieking "Yeah, I'm at the airport, we just landed!" into their phones. As anyone who flies knows, many passengers ignore the rules on cell phone use after arrival and use their electronics anyway.

"Customers will no longer have the frustration of having to wait until their plane has arrived at the terminal building before being able to use their mobile phones and other hand held electronic devices," an empathetic airline spokesperson says."Now they'll have that extra time to phone ahead for that important business meeting, check their emails or make sure someone is there to meet them at the airport."

The new policy might represent a minor breakthrough in the ongoing "Why can't I use my phone on the plane?" global whinge-fest, but it still doesn't give passengers what they really want -- in-flight, in-your-face, full-on airborne phone privileges. There hasn't been any conclusive proof that devices such as phones and e-readers are a danger.fd3ADSAa23

Presently, it is so irritating to hear i9500 S4 1:1 cellphone users when boarding the aircraft, each speaking on a cellphone with one hand while trying to put their oversized bag with the other hand in the overhead bin.Well, there will be trouble in the skies, I predict, and that will be between passengers. That trouble will be between those who want a quiet and pleasant trip, and the obnoxious cellphone users who are loudly speaking on the phone so everyone can hear how "important" they are.

The rampant fraud that spurred Brazil’s banking industry to become one of the world’s most technologically advanced is turning into a hurdle as credit-card processor Cielo SA (CIEL3) tries to persuade consumers to use mobile phones for payments.Cielo, which has had phone-payment capabilities since the end of 2010, will expand its mobile and e-commerce offerings as soon as next year in Brazil after buying Redwood City, California-based Merchant e-Solutions for $670 million in September, Chief Executive Officer Romulo Dias said.

Kingwood-area retailers host cell-phone drop-off -PriceAngels

Three Humble-area retailers are collecting used i9500 S4 cell phones and cell-phone accessories to be recycled to provide calling cards for military service members stationed overseas.Cell Phones for Soldiers, is a 501(3) organization that was launched in 2004 by Massachusetts teenagers Robbie and Brittany Bergquist. It started as a way to show the Bergquist family's appreciation for service personnel.

The program collects cell phones that are sent to a recycling center in Ohio. The recycling center will, depending on the condition of the phone, strip the phone of the small metal components to be reused in other phones, or the phones will be refurbished to be resold in other markets.Brittany Bergquist said the type of cell phones they collect are typically the older flip phones that are quickly disappearing from the market, but they will take all kinds.

"Any type of phone is acceptable," she said. "Even bag phones, car phones and those old brick phones from when cell phones first came out."Bergquist said the phones don't have to be in working condition to be accepted. They have accepted phones that are water-logged, have been run over or smashed beyond repair.

"We accept all of them," she said. The money derived from the Ohio recycling center for those old cell phones is used to purchase calling cards that are sent to the troops overseas. The inspiration for Cell Phones for Soldiers came as a result of a news story that Brittany and Robbie Bergquist had seen in their hometown about a soldier who'd amassed an $8,000 cell-phone bill to speak with loved ones from his overseas location.

"It was the first time we'd ever heard that the troops had to pay for their own phone calls home," she said."We knew we wanted to do something to make a difference."Their first hope was to pay off the soldier's i9500 S4 1:1 cell phone bill, but when they realized they could do more to help, they became inspired.DSsSed2ed

"We knew this was our calling," she said.Calling cards can be requested by the military service member's family or through the service members command by contacting Cell Phones for Soldiers through their website.Bergquist said Cell phones for Soldiers has sent out requests for as many as 5,000 calling cards at one time, which were distributed by unit chaplains or commanders who often work tirelessly to maintain good morale among the troops.

"It makes us feel good that we can support our troops and really help our heroes," she said.Since the launch of the nonprofit, it has provided 2.5 million phone cards, which equates to 181 million minutes of talk time. The program has also recycled more about 10.8 million cell phones, reducing their impact on landfills throughout the United States.

"This is what Cell Phones for Soldiers has become, and it's incredible to have touched so many lives," Bergquist said.Through July 31, the PostNet locations will be collecting used cell phones during regular business hours.

You may need a scorecard to keep up with Samsung's latest tablets-PriceAngels

Last week in London, the tech giant announced two new Windows 8 slates: the ATIV Q and the ATIV Tab 3. Only four months earlier at Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, Samsung introduced another model, the Galaxy Note 8 newest tablets. And today , Samsung said it was bringing out three new Galaxy Tab 3 tablets: in 7, 8 and 10.1-inch screen sizes. The 7-inch device will run on the Android 4.1 operating system, while the latter devices run on Android 4.2, or Jelly Bean.

The latest machines start arriving in the U.S. on July 7, with Samsung starting to accept pre-orders Tuesday. Tab 3 models come in white or a hue Samsung describes as gold brown. Prices are $199, $299 and $399, respectively.

While Samsung appears have a model in its portfolio that would theoretically appeal to any given tablet buyer, it also risks confusing consumers. Which is it now, a Galaxy Tab, Galaxy Note 8, ATIV? Or is it perhaps the Galaxy Note II "phablet" that depending on your viewpoint is either a small tablet or oversized smartphone?

Samsung is pushing this latest Tab 3 trio as a less expensive alternative to the Note 8, with a user interface that ought to be familiar and serve as a complement to folks who have bought the company's current flagship smartphone, the Galaxy S 4.Samsung cites research from Forrester stating that 49% of U.S. consumers who own both a mobile phone and tablet prefer the tablet as their primary device to go online. And data from the same survey further indicates that across 25 types of tablet applications there is no single dominant use of tablets by users.

The survey goes on to say that a typical user is more well-defined by their lack of uniformity as evidenced by the fact that they engage in a widely varied mix of five to six different application types in a given month with only games topping the 50% threshold for all tablet users.DSsSed2ed

Samsung is pushing Tab 3's use in the living room. They feature IR Blasters that transform the latest android tablet into universal remote controls. Folks can get TV recommendations and on-demand content via Samsung's WatchOn service. The tablets are Wi-Fi only, but buyers do get one year of Boingo hotspot service gratis, along with three months of free Hulu Plus service and two years of free DropBox Service with up to 50 GB storage space.

Tab 3's are less robust than their premium Android sibling, the $399 Galaxy Note 8, which would appeal more to people who tend to use their tablets for creative pursuits. For instance, Note 8 users can exploit Samsung's so-called S Pen for drawing, jotting notes and taking advantage of other tricks.

Pick Up the Phone!-PriceAngels

This summer, I am taking it upon myself to assist people in exploring ways to communicate. This is going to be much easier than you might imagine. I have something to tell each and every one of you: That invention that you use to type text messages can also be used to make i9500 S4 phone calls!

I cannot tell you how many conversations I have had in the last few weeks with people who are sick and tired of people sending them nothing but text messages. For people under 30, I am going to sound like an old man, but here it goes: If you want to tell someone something important, you can actually pick up the phone and call them to speak to them and make sure that they understand you correctly. I know that this may sound crazy, but some people out there do not even have text messaging on their phones, so when you think you are communicating with them, you are not.

Last week I was at a party where a friend was telling me that during a recent family emergency, her family members sent her urgent text messages telling her to rush to the hospital. But guess what? She has never had text messaging on her phone. Her family had no response when she later asked, "Why didn't you simply call me to tell me about the emergency?" They were embarrassed to admit that none of them had even thought of actually dialing her number and speaking with her.sfko32ds2f

The second statement he made was even sweeter. He told me, "When I pick up the phone to chat with someone, I feel like I am visiting with them." What a novel idea to make someone feel special and actually hear their voice.

To this I say, "Amen!" You would not believe how well you can communicate when you actually pick up the phone to speak with someone. How many times have you read an email and asked yourself, "What the hell is this person saying?" Forget about all the text lingo and shortened words that people use. How many times have you meant something one way and it has been interpreted differently by the person receiving the text? And for those of you who have no clue what some of the text lingo being used is, check this out.

What I am getting at is this: If you want to make sure that what you are saying is communicated correctly, pick up the i9500 S4 1:1 phone. And in today's dating world, if you want to make someone feel special, try speaking to them instead of sending them a text. You will be surprised by how many people will say, "Thanks for the call. It was great hearing from you."

For all of you out there who think I am crazy for telling you to pick up the phone and actually speak to someone, I have this to say: HAND, ATB, KC, T+, TTFN. For those of you who are wondering what the hell that means, have a nice day, all the best, keep cool, think positive, and ta-ta for now.

Review: Sony Xperia Tablet Z-PriceAngels

When it comes to mobile devices, I’m pretty solidly in the Apple camp. Between iPods, iPhones and iPads, Apple has a pretty solid “in” around our house. I do own Android versions like a Nook newest tablets, but they tend to not see the same kind of use that the Apple gear does. That being said, this Apple slant is personal preference only — I review costumer electronics from a wide range of platforms and manufacturers and there are some pretty good alternatives out there. Having just spent a week playing with a new Sony Xperia Z 10.1-Inch tablet, I have to say, the next time I’m shopping for a tablet that’s not an iPad, this thing will be at the very top of my list.

Sony has always done industrial design well. From TVs to computers, the company is up there when it comes to putting out attractive products and the Xperia Tablet Z reflects this aesthetic. At just .27-inches thick and weighing only 1.09 pounds, Sony claims this is the thinnest and lightest 10-inch tablet out there. I found it extremely comfortable to hold and it’s one of the few full-sized tablets I’ve used that are well-suited to a single-handed grip for extended periods of time (a contoured rubberized strip of trip along the edge helps here). It’s also waterproof, able to survive a 30 minute dunking in up to three feet of water, and dust resistant. Svelteness and durability aside, the Xperia Z tablet just plain looks good.

The Xperia Tablet Z wouldn’t win in a ppi numbers war. In fact it wouldn’t come close. Its 1920 x 1200 resolution on a 10.1-inch screen means a ppi of 224. The latest full-sized iPad has a 264 ppi display, while Google’s Nexus 10 has a 300 ppi display.sfko32ds2f

Despite this, the Xperia Tablet Z’s display looks extremely sharp. It’s still capable of displaying full HD content and Sony’s image processor (the Mobile BRAVIA Engine 2) does a superb job with motion and color. The display is bright, sharp and shows an amazing color palette — Sony says it’s the widest color spectrum available on any tablet. Whatever the marketing claims, my advice is don’t focus on this tablet’s relatively low ppi, unless you’re into hardware specs bragging rights. The display is simply fantastic.

Let’s face it, early versions of Android on tablets led to an experience that was sub-par compared to iPads. I don’t want to get into a flame war (I’ve used both platforms and own an Android tablet), but there really was no comparison when it came to a polished user experience. With Jelly Bean, that’s changed. Sony puts its own UI over top of Android 4.1, but combined with a very snappy CPU (a quad-core Snapdragon at 1.5GHz) and that display, this is a tablet that’s extremely enjoyable to use. I don’t feel like I’m giving something up compared to an iPad — it’s just different. Presumably Android 4.2 (which the Sony doesn’t yet support) will make things even better.

The Xperia latest android tablet was one of those review products that hurt to pack back into its box. I didn’t want to send it back. I really enjoyed using it and while I still turned to my iPad for some games, during the time that it was here, the Sony tablet was the one I used 90 percent of the time — and not just because I was reviewing it. I really liked it. The 16:9 form factor combined with its light weight made it ideal for scanning and reading web content, while the visual pop of the display made any multimedia applications shine.

Avoid Using Cell Phones While Walking In Public-PriceAngels

Despite the recent drop in the number of injured pedestrians, total injuries related to walking while using a GT-I9300 cell phone have more than doubled over the past decade.Jack Nasar, co-author of the study and professor of city and regional planning at The Ohio State University, said that if this trend continues he wouldn't be surprised if the number of pedestrian deaths related to cell phone use doubles again by 2015.

He added that "the role of cell phones in distracted driving injuries and deaths gets a lot of attention and rightly so, but we need to also consider the danger cell phone use poses to pedestrians."According to the results of the study people between the ages of 16 to 25 were at the most risk of being injured because of cell phone use.

The researchers analyzed injury reports of more than 100 hospitals collected by the National Electronic Injury Surveillance System - a database maintained by the U.S. Consumer Products Safety Commission (CPSC). From 2004 to 2010 the investigators identified the number of pedestrian injuries which were associated with cell phone use.

The researchers came across several cases of accidents while people were walking and talking on their mobile phones. One case involved a teenage boy walking straight off a bridge into a ditch while talking on a cell phone, and another man was hit by car while walking across the road and chatting on his phone.

In 2004, around 559 pedestrians were admitted to hospital following an injury related to cell phone use, the following year there were only 256 cases. However, the number of pedestrians treated in emergency rooms while using their cell phone has risen every year since 2005.The authors say that the number of cell phone-related injuries could actually be a lot higher.12ffglGRD

They believe that a better way of calculating the real extent of pedestrian injuries related to cell phone use could come from comparing distracted walking to distracted driving - which has been studied very well. A study published in the American Journal of Public Health revealed that texting and cell phone use have led to a significant rise in fatalities due to distracted driving, rising from 4,572 fatalities in 2005 to 5,870 in 2008.

Another study, which appeared in the journal Applied Cognitive Psychology showed that people have greater difficultly maintaining a fixed speed, or keeping their car safe in a single lane when using their cell phone. The researchers compared CPSC estimates for injuries among drivers who were distracted by GT-I9500 cell phones with more accurate data gathered from emergency rooms.

The analysis revealed that the number of actual crash-related injuries in emergency rooms related to cell phone use is grossly underestimated by the CPSC. In fact, Nasar said that the real number of injuries is more than 1,300 times higher than what the CPSC estimated.

Cell Phone Surcharge for Monroe County Residents Will Go To 911 Center

They're always there to pick up on the other end of your 911 call. At Monroe County's 911 center, 72 percent of the call volume comes from GT-I9300 cell phones."It's changed dramatically from a landline-based society to a cell phone-based society," said Stephen Cusenz, 911 Center deputy director.

The change has caused the center to lose out on money that's generated from landline surcharges. Now they plan to get that money back, with help from you, if you own a cell phone.Tuesday night, the Monroe County legislature passed a measure that will allow 30 cents to be added to all cell phone bills.

Willie Lightfoot was one of three out of the 20 votes that turned it down."Being ranking minority member of the Public Safety Committee as well as a firefighter, I am supportive of bringing assistance to the 911 Center. However, I think there could be other ways to do that," said Lightfoot, D.

Thirty cents may sound like it's just loose change, but when you multiply it by 500,000 GT-I9500 cell phone users in the county, that shakes out to $1.8 million."The funding could be used to increase staffing. It could be utilized to refresh or purchase equipment if necessary to maintain the facilities within the 911 Center. It could be done without increasing any property taxes," said Cusenz.xs43DAs43

Cell phone users already pay a $1.20 surcharge. According to Cusenz, that money goes into a state general fund and is not all returned to county residents. Some cell phone users say the extra 30 cents may not add much more of a burden to their bill. It's not too much money to hand out of your pocket for something like that.

"I'm paying $37 more just for the internet, plus an extra .30 cents which is going to add up a lot over the years, said Erick Odychuk."It's not too much money to hand out of your pocket for something like that I5 MTK6577," said Daniel Odychuk. The measure now goes to the State Assembly for a vote. If passed, the county legislature will vote again to make it a local law, and you could start seeing that extra surcharge as early as September.

The Australian tablet market grew by a remarkable 147% year-on-year during the first quarter of 2013, to 1.14 million units, according to new figures. However, on a slightly sour note for Apple, the IDC figures also show Android and Windows tablets gained marketshare at the expense of the iPad on both a year-on-year and quarter-on-quarter basis.xs43DAs43

“Users now have better access to a wide range of low to high-end tablets as well as different operating systems compared to last year. In 2012, a user would usually choose between an Apple iPad or a Samsung Galaxy Tab but now, a year later, brands like ASUS, Acer, and Microsoft would also appear on the user’s radar," says Suzanne Tai, associate market analyst of IDC's ANZ Infrastructure Research Group.

"Whitebox [generic brand] 8 inch tablet have picked up significantly as well, driven with heavy promotions by retailers such as Aldi, Harvey Norman, K-Mart and Warehouse Stationary.”"Android is growing its foothold in the marketplace, thanks to Samsung's aggressiveness with promotions and channel strategies, as well as the influx of whitebox tablets. Additionally, Windows tablets are also gaining traction with entry of new models, pilot rollouts and implementations in commercial sector especially in education,” Tai says.

Microsoft Can't Sell Its Tablets To Consumers, So It's Selling Them To Schools For Cheap

Microsoft is giving out its newest tablets like candy. Last week, Microsoft announced it would give away Surface RT tablets to the 10,000 teachers attending the International Society for Technology in Education conference later this month.Earlier this month, Microsoft offered highly discounted Surface RT and Surface Pro tablets to those who attended TechEd North America 2013.

Now, Microsoft is launching a new program this week to sell heavily discounted Surface RT tablets to schools, Mary Jo Foley of ZDNet reports.

As part of Microsoft's new offer, schools throughout 25 countries will be able to purchase Surface RT tablets in bulk for more than 50% off per unit. Though, they will only be able to buy variations of the 32 GB Surface RT models. Microsoft's program starts June 24 and goes until August 31. Microsoft's Surface RT tablet debuted last year as the company's direct competitor to Apple's iPad. But with just 1.8% of the tablet market share, Microsoft is clearly trying to get its tablets in more hands. xs43DAs43

In Q1 2013, Microsoft sold a total of 900,000 tablets, most of which were the Surface Pro, according to a May report from the International Data Corporation. Compare that to 19.5 million tablets Apple sold, and the 8.8 million Samsung sold. In short, the Surface RT is Microsoft's least popular latest android tablet.

To make matters worse for Microsoft, its Windows 8 and Windows RT mobile operating systems aren't very popular, either. The combined shipments of Windows 8 and Windows RT in Q1 '13 reached 1.8 million units. Its Windows RT operating system is also one of the least popular, making up for just 0.4% of the tablet operating market share.

Earlier this week the folks from AT&T announced they’ll be the exclusive carrier of the Samsung Galaxy Note 8.0 tablet with 4G LTE. At the same time they detailed a pretty stellar deal offering the tablet for $199 (instead of $399) when bundled with participating Samsung Galaxy smartphones. A deal indeed. Today Samsung’s confirmed Verizon wants in on the fun, and will be doing the same for the rest of June.

From what we’re hearing, Verizon will be offering $100 off any Samsung 10-inch tablet with Verizon 4G LTE as a bundle deal for those purchasing the Galaxy S4, or the Galaxy S III. Instead of paying full price for the tablet, they’ll give you $100 towards the tablet of your choice if you’re also getting a new Samsung Galaxy smartphone.

And of course this requires a new 2-year contract, but that was expected. Samsung shared the details this evening over on Twitter, and Verizon’s also updated their Q88 Tablet support page with the $100 off sticker for those interested. They only have two 10-inch tablets available, but this is a good deal for those in need of a good smartphone/tablet combo for summer, or starting College soon.

A $100,000 iPhone 5 for Those with Deep Pockets

Goldgenie, the company behind the $2200 Samsung Galaxy S4, is back with another expensive version of a popular smartphone, this time an cheap iphone 4 cases iPhone 5 sporting both gold and diamonds with a price tag that only a select few will be able to afford.

Earlier this year, Goldgenie, a company that specializes in high-end versions of popular smartphones, announced an extremely pricey version of the Samsung Galaxy S4. Specifically, the device is a Samsung Galaxy S4 that costs $2200 and comes with Gold, Platinum and Rose Gold 24ct. bands. Users have the choice between the white or black Galaxy S4 though the precious metals ensure that the price is far more expensive than the $199 Galaxy S4 price at most U.S. carriers.

Goldgenie though has decided to up the ante with a new limited edition version of the iPhone 5 that comes with solid 18.ct gold, 300 certified diamonds and a price tag that puts the Galaxy S4′s to shame. The price tag for the solid gold Superstar ICE cheap iphone 4s cases, as the company calls it, is a whopping £68,000.00. When converted, it means that the device would cost buyers in America over $106,000. Again, this is for an iPhone 5, a device that is $199.99 on-contract on all carriers in the United States.

Of course, Goldgenie is offering a less expensive model for those that can’t afford its top-flight Superstart ICE iPhone 5.For a model without the diamonds, dubbed Solid Gold Superstar iPhone 5, buyers will have to shell out £48,000.00 which is just about $75,000 dollars for buyers in the U.S., a steep discount over the model that encrusted with diamonds.

Those with this kind of cash will be delighted to know that the iPhone 5 is SIM-free which means that it can be taken to carriers around the globe. It will also come with the same specifications that come with the regular version of the apple accessories.

That means a 4-inch Retina display, 8MP camera, HD front-facing camera, iOS 6 and more. And like the other iPhone 5 models, it will be updated to the new iOS 7 which is coming some time later on this fall. The last day of the workweek, Microsoft unleashed Office Mobile for iPhone. The app, which features Word, Excel and PowerPoint document viewing alongside some elementary editing, is written for the iPhone, but users can run the app on Retina-equipped iPads and the iPad Mini if they can stomach the real-size-of-the-iPhone display or a 2X-expanded look, the two options the iPad gives native iPhone apps.

If legitimate, the part could hint that Apple's next best iphone 4s accessories will sport largely the same design as the iPhone 5. That would be in line with rumors, which have dubbed the handset as the "iPhone 5S," suggesting that any hardware upgrades would not alter the design of the device. An identically sized space for a processor could signal that the next iPhone will retain the 32-nanometer process utilized to build the current A6 and A6X chips found in the iPhone 5 and fourth-generation iPad, respectively. Apple switched from a 45-nanometer process to 32 nanometers in 2012 with the debut of the A5 CPU.

Sony's Xperia Tablet Z takes on water resistance

I took a 7 inch tablet computer and submerged it in a bowl of water for several minutes. I then poured more liquid onto it from a pitcher. Later, I gave the machine a cold shower. There were no ill effects after each dousing.I’ve been testing the Xperia Tablet Z, Sony’s latest showcase slate, the kind of notice-me hardware that the company hopes will help rescue its struggling electronics business from the deep end. It’s one of the best Android tablets I’ve tried.

Tablet Z is impervious to water, and resistant to dust, too. It can withstand the kind of impending disaster that would likely drown a rival tablet. You know, when the kids knock over your morning coffee or you accidentally drop the tablet into a puddle or the kitchen sink.

Tablet Z is water resistant, not waterproof, an important distinction. Though Sony invites you to bring the Z to the pool or the beach, you presumably wouldn’t want to drop it in saltwater or a swimming pool full of chlorine. The only claim Sony is making is that the machine is water resistant up to 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. You must also ensure that the flaps protecting the ports and connectors are firmly closed.

Keep in mind that you’re not really meant to use it in the shower. As water pounded the display, the multitouch-screen jumped from one app to the next. Once I dried the 10 inch tablets, order was restored. If water resistance were the only feature Sony had going with Tablet Z, I’d advise you to look elsewhere. Fortunately, Sony has designed an Android tablet with other benefits.dfdf1323D

Sony managed to pack a robust quad core Qualcomm Snapdragon processor into an exceptionally svelte (0.27-inch) and lightweight, 1.1-pound rectangular design. This is a good-looking, premium machine. The full high-definition 10.1-inch display (1,920 x 1,200) is very nice, though to my eye not as superior as some other tablet screens I’ve seen, including the Retina display on the iPad. I don’t shoot many pictures on a 8 inch tablet, but the results here are decent, if by no means exceptional. Tablet Z has an 8.1-megapixel rear camera and a 2.2-megapixel front camera.

It also has a microSD memory card slot, and HDMI for connecting the tablet to a larger-screen high-definition monitor. As expected, Sony leans heavily on its own entertainment properties — its Video Unlimited movie store and its Music Unlimited store. Gamers will appreciate that it is PlayStation-certified.

The tablet also takes advantage of Near Field Communication technology for wirelessly sharing music, pictures, Web pages or other files with compatible phones or other devices. I got it to work with a Google Nexus 7 tablets for sale, albeit with some trial and error.Sony claims up to 10 hours of video playback on its battery or eight hours of Web browsing.

Sony’s look-how-I-can-swim hardware isn’t cheap, but there are a lot of things to like: thin, attractive design, water resistance. The big question Sony faces is how big a splash that all adds up to, given all the Android tablets, and a rather formidable (albeit, keep-me-dry) rival in the iPad.

Tablets More Useful Than Smartphones, Doctors Say

The two reports, titled "Mobile Usage in the Medical Space 2013" and "newest tablets Usage by Physicians 2013", found that doctors who use EHRs and a smartphone or tablet mainly use their handheld devices for sending and reading emails.

Physicians with tablets use their device to access EHRs much more frequently than smartphones, 51 percent of the physicians surveyed who had tablets reported using them daily to check EHRs, while only 7 percent of doctors reported checking EHRs daily using their smartphones.

75 percent of doctors who have access to EHRs use a smartphone and 33 percent use a tablet. However, time spent using the tablet to access the records is significantly (66 percent) higher.Google managed to make a big splash in the tablet market with the launch of its Nexus latest android tablet last year. It was expected that the company will be unveiling its successor at this year's Google I/O but that did not happen.

A recent report by CNET claims that Google is very close to launching its next generation of Nexus 7 tablet. The website has got this bit of information from market research company IHS. The report also illustrates that Japan Display and AUO have been roped to manufacture the display second generation Nexus 7. In addition to this, Quanta is the company that is making the tablet itself.

Another news report by DigiTimes claims that this Nexus 7 tablet will indeed start retailing in the month of July. This report adds that Google will price the 16GB version of Nexus 7 successor for $229. The report adds that the price of this tablet has been deliberately kept higher than its predecessor so that the company is not competing directory with the low-end tablet makers.dfdf1323D

The other rumoured specifications of the forthcoming Q88 Tablet from Google include a 1920 x1200 display, with a pixel density of 323 pixels per inch. It is expected that this tablet will be powered by Qualcomm's Snapdragon processor rather than the NVIDIA Tegra 3 processor on-board its predecessor. This tablet from Google is likely to compete head on with next generation iPad mini and Kindle Fire HD tablets from Apple and Amazon.

The Nexus 7 tablet was made by Google in collaboration with Asus. The tablets for sale sports 7-inch IPS display screen with a 1280x800 resolution. The other features of the tablet include 1GB of RAM, 1.2-megapixel front camera and 4,325 mAh battery. This tablet is available on Google Play for $199.

It will be interesting to see if Google indeed prices its second generation of Nexus 7 tablet at a higher price and if the move hurts sales.

The oversized plastic fashion glasses are a fashion statement that doesn't necessarily adhere to the guidelines of what style of sunglasses is most flattering based on your facial shape. It doesn't matter with these sunglasses -- they are oversized regardless of face shape or features. The oversized plastic sunglasses project an aloof and self-contained persona while at the same time telling the world that you don't take yourself too seriously. It's an opportunity to display different facets of your personality. Which is a very intriguing and liberating idea, when you consider the possibilities that abound.desSDds34

It doesn't matter if you are a trendsetter or march to the beat of your own drum, this is a style that young and old can enjoy. This is perhaps the second time around for oversized plastic fashion eyeglasses. Predictable? Boring? Not with these babies on. It's a miraculous transformation brought about by wearing some plastic over your eyes. Whether you seek to portray mystery, whimsy or you've obviously mistaken me for someone who cares... this particular style of sunglasses has a unique adaptability to fit almost any occasion and personality.

Call them goofy. Call them silly. Opinions are like noses, most people have one and no two are the same. But what becomes abundantly clear is that big plastic fashion sunglasses are here to stay. They may alter in appearance slightly over time.

Is Apple going big with the iPhone while others go small?

After a photo and more details of the HTC One Mini appeared last night, I posted some thoughts on these new small Androids and speculated that we might be seeing a trend to people using a smaller phone and a compact tablet. A short time later, Reuters posted that cheap iphone 4 cases could be considering 4.7-inch and 5.7-inch displays for the next iPhone.

Before an actual iPhone announcement, there will be a ton of speculation, and it is not unexpected that Apple is looking at all sorts of different sizes and designs. The iPhone 5 has a 4-inch display and I personally find the size nearly perfect for one-handed use while still being large enough for apps to be very usable.

I do like large phones and would probably purchase a larger iPhone, but there is still something to be said for having a device small enough to use with one hand and fit into the pocket of any person. I am not convinced that Apple will jump from 4 inches all the way up to 4.7 or 5.7 inches.

Apple already has a solution for those looking to spend more time browsing the Internet and enjoying video content on a larger display in the iPad Mini. If Apple decides to launch a large display iPhone, I think they need to still offer a 4-inch model.

I personally would like to see improvements in the camera (better low-light performance), longer battery life, NFC, and continued metal construction. Actually, it is tough for me to come up with too many improvements in the iPhone, but I would love to hear what else people think can be done to improve cheap iphone 4s cases smartphone.

Apple is reportedly looking at launching inexpensive iPhone models in various colors to hit emerging markets as well has smartphones with larger screens.According to Reuters, Apple is exploring colors and screen sizes to diversify its iPhone line-up. Analysts note that Apple will pursue a "good/better/best" segmentation for its iPhone lineup.desSDds34

Sound familiar? It should. apple accessories seems to be planning to model its iPhone sales model after what it did with the iPod. Low-end devices like the Shuffle pave the way for a mid-range device such as the nano and ultimately get you to an iPod touch. The iPad with the addition of the mini is getting a similar set-up.

Reuters' report, like previous ones highlighting a cheap iPhone play, note that product plans for Apple may change. For instance, Apple may look at a 4.7-inch screen iPhone and a 5.7-inch screen. Apple may want to take a wait-and-see approach with the large screen sizes. Anecdotally, I've heard at least a dozen people buy the Samsung Galaxy S4 and note that the screen is too big. Samsung's Galaxy Mini may offset those concerns.

What's unclear about Apple's plan is how it will affect profit margins. Cheap and colorful iPhones will inevitably cannibalize sales on the higher-end version. best iphone 4s accessories could make up the difference on volume, but maybe not. Regardless, Apple needs an inexpensive phone to compete in emerging markets like China and India.

At AllThingsD's D11 conference, Apple CEO Tim Cook acknowledged that the iPhone hasn't replicated the iPod market segmentation model "yet."

Cell phone use exploding

ON AN AVERAGE DAY in China, 135,416 new top 10 cell phones are registered. According to China’s Ministry of Information Industry, 67,677,000 new cell phone users were registered in 2006, bringing the total number of cell phone users in China to 461,082,000. Today, thirty-five out of every one hundred Chinese have cell phones.

Although the number of cell phone users in China is larger than that of America, cell phone is much popular in America. According to the survey by the CTIA, an international association for the Wireless Telecommunications Industry, by the end of 2006, there were around 230 millions cell phone subscribers in America, which means seventy-six out of every one hundred Americans have cell phones.

Guangdong province has led the best cell phone deals push in China. By the end of 2006, 7,117,500 people in Guangdong owned cell phones, roughly 77% of the province’s population. In fact, the first cell phone in China was registered in the Guangdong capital of Guangzhou on November 18, 1987. Guangdong was also the first province to allow its citizens to receive news via cell phone.

This forward thinking that exists in Guangdong has proven extremely lucrative for the county. According to a news article from Xinhua, China’s official news agency, in 2006, 2% of Guangdong’s gross domestic product came from the sale of cell phones and its related products. The Guangdong branch of China Mobile, one of China’s biggest cell phone companies, earned US$6.4 billion in 2006.

Zhejiang and Shandong provinces are second and third, respectively, in terms of the greatest number of cell phone users. In 2006, Zhejiang had 30,123,000 cell phone users (65.3% of the population) while Shangdong had 29,160,000 (31.76 % of the population).desSDds34

Nowadays, Latest Smartphones providers aim at bringing this technology to the rural areas, where cell phones are still rare. According to the China Daily, 57% of China’s population lives in rural areas. Only 15% of that rural population uses cell phones. However, as the purchasing power of farmers increases, dominate cell phone makers such as Nokia and Sony Ericsson are trying to cultivate this large consumption potential.

China’s Ministry of Information Industry predicts that by the end of 2007, the number of cell phone users will reach up to 520 million, or increase by 17% from 2006. The reunion of man with smartphone offered a fantastic love story. The separation also provided an understanding of what’s being experienced by thousands of U.S. Open attendees.

Fans are not permitted to bring cell phones onto the golf course. Spectators unaware of the restriction have their phones confiscated until they can retrieve them when they leave.Life without a Buy Cell Phones left me feeling exposed. I’m probably giving away a superb advertisement campaign with an admission that I feel naked without my smartphone.

Cell-phone search bill is a bad idea

When a drunken driver crashes his car, the evidence sticks around. It’s on his breath and in his blood. A well-trained police officer can spot the signs of a DWI as a routine matter. But what if a driver was talking on the phone when he crashed? Or worse, texting? By the time police arrive, phones can be hidden, texts deleted. Ordinarily, it takes a subpoena to get a straight answer.

It’s a real problem. Last month, the National Safety Council warned that GT-I9300 cell phones’ role in crashes is dangerously underreported.

Sen. James Holzapfel (R-Ocean) wants to let police ask for your phone when they ask for your license and registration. No subpoena, no probable cause. The bill requires only “reasonable grounds,” a much lower standard. He’s sponsored a bill to allow officers to check your phone for calls or text messages after a crash — but nothing more. Even that search goes too far.

The American Civil Liberties Union says the bill, if passed, would face a constitutional challenge as an illegal search. It’s easy to see why.Today’s GT-I9500 cell phones are barely phones at all. They’re a trove of personal information — photos, banking, contacts and call history, texts and e-mails, likes and dislikes. Virtually all of a person’s personal life flows through the device at some point. That’s too much to hand over on a mere suspicion.

And what if a passenger borrowed the driver’s phone to make a call or send a text? Some phones send texts with voice commands. Those are gaping loopholes in this bill. Under these rules, police still wouldn’t know whether a phone contributed to a crash — or if the driver was using it at all. If the cops can’t search your trunk without a warrant, why let them search your phone?

Holzapfel’s bill is well-intended. He’s a former prosecutor, and he wants law enforcement to have the tools it needs. But this bill doesn’t solve the problem. Without it, authorities can still subpoena phone records as part of a crash investigation. And they can still ask permission.

The bill’s biggest failure is that it falls short on the best strategy to stop distracted driving: keeping drivers from using their I5 MTK6577 phones in the first place. Holzapfel’s bill would raise the fines for texting while driving to $300. That’s not enough.

New Jersey should ban the use of all phones behind the wheel, even hands-free. The National Transportation Safety Board has called for a nationwide ban, arguing the conversation is the most dangerous distraction — whether drivers have a phone in their hands or not.

Many of the training attendees receive their cell phones from their children as a necessary safety precaution in case health-related emergencies ever arise, like Lenor Floras, 74, and her husband Tony.“We hardly use it but we take it everywhere,” Tony Floras said, shrugging in the direction of the black phone in front of him.The couple has one flip cheap cell phone cases between the two of them, though they prefer to use a land line for making everyday calls.

“I have to learn everything,” Lenor Floras said, dragging out the word “everything” for emphasis and bursting into laughter when asked what she was hoping to learn.Sylvia Aldrete, director in external affairs for AT&T, said the trainings allow seniors to use their phones to the fullest capacity, something that’s important in staying connected.

Samsung working on a 12.2-inch tablet for Q3 2013: Report

After reports indicating the possibility of Apple working on a 12.9-inch tablet, the latest buzz is around Samsung developing a 12.2-inch 7 inch tablet of its own. They'll sport a resolution of 2560x1600 pixels and will come with an S Pen stylus, which is usually bundled with devices under the Galaxy Note series. Samsung is likely to launch the tablet in the third quarter of 2013.

Previously, the same website had reported that Apple was working on a new larger iPad with a 12.9-inch diagonal screen that would be called iPad Maxi. It had said that this iPad variant would launch in the first half of 2014 and would take on Ultrabooks. It would also target the educational market with digital textbooks. The website had cited industry sources to report that Apple was in talks with display and component manufacturers in Korea for supplies for this tablet.

While Samsung offers devices across all sizes with its tablets coming in 7-inch, 8-inch and 10-inch screen form factors, Apple only offers the iPad in 10 inch tablets and the iPad mini in 7.9-inch screen sizes. Considering that portable laptops start with 11-inch screens and offer a more complete computing experience as they come with a keyboard, we're not sure if going above the 10-inch screen size would help companies bring new customers with jumbo sized tablets. The laptops and Ultrabooks also offer a desktop OS and more connectivity ports. On the other hand tablets are limited in this aspect but focus more on portability. Perhaps these tablets will target niche markets including the educational market and design professionals.

Acer's trying to confuse us: they call the new Acer Aspire P3 an Ultrabook when it's actually a Windows 8 tablet with a keyboard case. In fact, they've switched from the Iconia 8 inch tablet branding to the Aspire notebook brand, yet the Aspire P3 is the near clone of the Acer Iconia W700 11.6" Windows 8 tablet. The Aspire P3 runs Windows 8 64 bit on a 1.5GHz Intel Core i5-3339Y dual core CPU and it has a 1366 x 768 IPS multi-touch display. Inside you'll find 4 gigs of DDR3 RAM and a 120 gig SSD drive. Like Microsoft Surface and Acer's own W700, it has Ultrabook internals. It can easily handle MS Office, web, streaming video and photo editing.

Acer includes a keyboard case that's reminiscent of the more robust models available for the iPad. It has a Bluetooth keyboard and black faux leather backing that's attractive. The tablet snaps into the back section of the case but there's no release lever, so it takes a bit of fiddling and prying to get it out, not unlike hard plastic smartphone cases that wrap around the sides. The tablet and case together weigh 3 pounds, and the tablet alone weighs 1.74 pounds, which is a bit lighter than the 2.1 pound Acer W700.

The tablet has an aluminum casing and it's hard to tell apart from the W700. It's a clean, straight-sided design and despite the slim design metal casing it doesn't get unbearably hot. It has a single USB 3.0 port, 3.5mm audio and micro HDMI but no SD card slot. It has a front 720p webcam and a passable rear 5MP camera with no flash.

This is one of the first Intel Y series CPUs we've tested in a product. This tablets for sale is a late third generation Ivy Bridge CPU meant to bridge the gap with Haswell in terms of power consumption. It's intended particularly for tablets and it runs at 13W max vs. 17 for ULV Ultrabook CPUs like that used in the W700, Asus Zenbook Prime and Acer Aspire S7. It's designed to putter along at an even more power frugal 7W. As you might expect, performance is thus slightly lower, and our model scored 3954 on PCMark 7 vs. 4357 on our 1.7GHz Intel Core i5-3317U Iconia W700. Still, it's responsive enough and is easily 4 to 5 times faster than today's Intel Atom Windows 8 tablets.

Survey of physicians suggests tablets more useful than smartphones

Two reports from AmericanEHR Partners based on a survey of nearly 1,400 physicians suggests that newest tablets are of greater use for clinical purposes than smartphones.

"Mobile Usage in the Medical Space 2013" and "Tablet Usage by Physicians 2013" reveal that the most common activity of physicians who use an electronic health record (EHR) and use a smartphone or tablet is "sending and receiving emails." The second most frequent activity among tablet users is accessing EHRs (51 percent daily). Just 7 percent of physicians use their smartphone to access EHRs. Among physicians who have an EHR, 75 percent use a smartphone and 33 percent use a tablet, but time spent on latest android tablet is 66 percent higher than time spent on smartphones.

"These two reports provide useful insights into how physicians use technology to interact with patients, physician satisfaction with mobile devices and apps, and the differences of technology use within various user demographics," said Thomas Stringham, co-founder of AmericanEHR Partners, which provides comprehensive information to support clinicians in the selection and use of EHRs to improve health care delivery.

The top market share position is held by Apple®, with 55 percent of physicians using smartphones and 54 percent using tablets. Clinical app usage in a medical practice was much higher among smartphone users (51 percent daily) than tablet users (30 percent daily). The top five smartphone apps used in a medical practice were Epocrates®, Medscape®, MedCalc®, Skyscape®, and Doximity®. The top five tablet apps used in a medical practice were Epocrates®, Medscape®, Up To Date®, MedCalc®, and Skyscape®.

Only 28 percent of smartphone users and 18 percent of tablet users were "very satisfied" with the quality of apps for their profession.Included with the Aspire P3 is a Bluetooth keyboard case that adds 1.3 lbs. to the Q88 Tablet overall weight. It's important to note that this keyboard doesn't attach mechanically to the tablet, as some other Windows 8 hybrids do. When open, the bottom lip of the slate rests in a groove right above the keyboard, so that the device is propped at a good angle for typing.

Though unique, this setup doesn't feel very secure. We had no trouble using the P3 on our lap, but we would expect the tablet to flop backward easily if we were on a bumpy bus ride or turbulent flight.Powered by a third-generation 1.5-GHz Intel Core i5-3339Y Processor, 4GB of RAM and a 120GB SSD, the Aspire P3 turned in above-average benchmark scores. However, other Windows 8 tablets are faster.

Above the keyboard is a power button, two blue status lights and a microUSB port used to charge the accessory. The power button and lights are hidden when the tablets for sale is propped up, but we like that the keyboard automatically paired with the tablet so that we didn't have to mess with any Bluetooth settings.

Apple to Revamp IPhone Software, Ending Product Funk

Apple Inc. (AAPL) is preparing to unveil sweeping changes to the software powering cheap iphone 4 cases and iPads, seeking to reignite desire for its products and blunt the advance of Google Inc. (GOOG)’s Android mobile operating system.“Apple has been in a funk, and this is an important event to highlight how they are innovating,” Reitzes said in an interview. “We need to see that next big innovation.”

With smartphones sharing many physical traits and technological features, device makers are relying more on software design and services to gain an edge and lure consumers.

As part of that, Apple will also unveil a music-streaming service, people familiar with the plans said last week. The feature won’t be available until iOS 7 is released later this year. Apple may also announce enhancements to its maps and Siri voice-recognition software. Apple’s shares rose 1.1 percent to $446.51 at 10:13 a.m. in New York.

While Cupertino, California-based cheap iphone 4s cases won’t be introducing a new iPhone or iPad, anticipation for the event has been building since Cook shuffled his lieutenants, putting head industrial designer Jonathan Ive in charge of the look and feel of Apple’s software. A longtime confidant of co-founder Steve Jobs and the draftsman behind the iPhone and Mac, Ive has been leading a remake of the iOS mobile software.sdfdDS2x

A lot is riding on whether those changes will prove to be a hit with buyers. Apple’s iOS accounted for 18 percent of global smartphone shipments in the first quarter, those running Android made up 74 percent, according to research-firm Gartner Inc. IPhone sales climbed about 16 percent in the period, lagging the smartphone market, which grew 43 percent.

Apple (AAPL) has traditionally previewed new iOS software at the conference and then released it to the public when a new apple accessories is introduced later in the year. This week’s event, which costs $1,600 to attend, is geared toward application developers. As Google, Microsoft Corp.

Apple’s new feature comes too late to spare 23-year-old Megan Boken of suburban Chicago, who was shot to death last year by a man who tried to steal her iPhone. Her father, Paul Boken, on Monday pronounced Apple's new feature "not complete enough." He said smartphone manufacturers ought to be required to create a feature that deactivates stolen phones immediately.

"A burglar is not going to interview an iPhone owner to see if they're on iCloud before they steal their best iphone 4s accessories," Boken said. "This doesn't strike me as being a technologically-advanced concept. But it's something that needs to be done."

New Jersey Bill Would Let Cops Search Cell Phones After Car Crashes

A new bill introduced in the New Jersey senate would allow police to collect and search top 10 cell phones at the scene of the car crash without a warrant. The measure lets officers determine whether a driver was texting or talking on the phone during the time of the collision. Opponents of the bill worry the measure will violate the driver’s privacy and Fourth Amendment right against unreasonable search and seizure.

New Jersey has some of the toughest hands-free cell phone laws in the country. Police can pull over motorists for reading, typing or sending text messages. According to the N.J. Division of Highway Traffic Safety, there were 1,840 crashes in 2011 involving handheld cell phone use, resulting in six deaths and 807 injuries.

"Think about it,” said the bill’s sponsor, Sen. James Holzapfel, R-Ocean, to The Star Ledger. “The chances of the cop witnessing the accident are slim to none. He’s dispatched, and by the time he gets there — unless they’re unconscious and the phone is in their hands, or some passenger says they were on the phone — then he’s got to do what? Subpoena the service to see if the best cell phone deals was actively used or not?"

A New Jersey represenative for the National Motorists Association, Steve Carrellas, said the bill is unlikely to solve any problems and questioned if it could even be utilized fairly.sdfdDS2x

"Here’s the bottom line: If you went all through what the bill is supposedly allowing, you still can’t determine if the person with the Latest Smartphones actually had a distraction that contributed to a crash," he said. The bill would have police searching the cell phone of any individual in the crash without knowledge of whether that person caused the accident in the first place. The American Civil Liberties Union of New Jersey is likely to challenge the constitutionality of the measure.

"This bill is problematic because it infringes on the privacy rights of citizens," said Alexander Shalom, the ACLU’s state policy counsel. "Our state and federal constitutions generally require probable cause before authorizing a search, particularly when it comes to areas that contain highly personal information such as cell phones."

A bill tightening hands-free laws was approved by the New Jersey Legislature in May and sent to Gov. Chris Christie for approvable. That law, S69, creates hefty fines for electronic distracted driving. For a first-time offender texting or talking on the Buy Cell Phones while driving, a fine of $200 to $400 would apply. For a second offense, $400 to $600. Fines up to $800 and possible 90-day suspension of a license are given on third and subsequent offenses.

Lawmakers Deny Knowing About Cell Phone

Responding to the furor over the National Security Agency’s data monitoring programs, Sen. Rand Paul of Kentucky introduced legislation Friday that requires a warrant be issued before any government agency can search GT-I9300 phone records of Americans. Paul calls the revelation of the program to collect phone records of millions of Verizon customers “an astounding assault on the Constitution.”

But meanwhile, lawmakers on both sides of the aisle deny Obama’s claims that they knew about plans to monitor cell phone and Internet use of Americans, and many said they either learned of the programs through the news or after asking specifically to be briefed.

Senate Majority Whip Dick Durbin, D-Ill., said that the average member of Congress doesn’t receive such briefings, and would not have know about programs to monitor cell phone records and Internet use unless they were on an intelligence committee, like Schock, were in special sessions in 2011 or asked to be briefed.New legislation now in the hands of Governor Jay Nixon removes limits on where GT-I9500 cell phones towers are located.

House bill 331 states that municipalities would be barred from evaluating applications for cell phone towers based on specific locations. Nor force companies to add equipment to an existing tower used by its competitor. Local governments also could not require companies to remove existing wireless facilities as a condition of building new ones.xc5CGsdh

The Missouri municipal league, which opposes the bill said the placement of large cell phone towers in town squares or residential neighborhoods, could hurt property values. Can you believe it?! Created in 1973, the first cellphone weighed about 2.5 pounds and served solely as a portable calling device.

Today, with slimmer phones, utilized through efficiency and providing users with the ability to multitask, the cellphone has come a long way. According to Mashable, since the first mobile phone call, placed by Martin Cooper, creator of the I5 MTK6577 cellphone, the mobile phone is now at a far greater value. Some of the first cellphones were priced anywhere from $4,000 to $8,000, whereas now, the prices have dramatically decreased and phones like the iPhone 5, can weigh as little as 3.95 ounces.Do you remember your first cellphone? How much has mobile technology advanced since then?

A couple years ago you had information in your column about where to recycle cellphones.Unfortunately, I didn't save it. Can you refresh my memory? I was particularly interested in the program you mentioned for the phones to help soldiers.

Answer: Thanks for remembering. I did a column on cell phone recycling in 2011. The program I mentioned to provide calling cards to soldiers was "Cellphones for Soldiers." Go to www.cellphonesforsoldiers for the details. This organization was founded by teenagers Brittany and Robbie Bergquist in 2004. Proceeds from this effort have provided more than 170 million free minutes to our soldiers who are overseas, allowing them to stay in touch with their families. The organization provides drop-off points all over the country, partnering with businesses and organizations. They can also provide a bag that can be used to mail cheap cell phone cases to them for recycling.

Your other options are still about the same. You can recycle your old phone through the Daily American. Funds generated help to support our Newspaper In Education (NIE) Program. This program provides free newspapers to classrooms around the county. Drop the phone off at our office during normal business hours. Call Wendy Stemple, my wife at 814-444-5920 if you have any questions.

Hit the beach with Sony Xperia Tablet Z

I took a 7 inch tablet computer and submerged it in a bowl of water for several minutes. I then poured more liquid onto it from a pitcher. Later I gave the machine a cold shower.

There were no ill effects after each dousing.I’ve been testing the Xperia Tablet Z, Sony’s latest showcase slate, the kind of notice-me hardware that the company hopes will help rescue its struggling electronics business from the deep end. It’s one of the best Android tablets that I’ve tried.

Tablet Z is impervious to water, and resistant to dust, too. It can withstand the kind of impending disaster that would likely drown a rival tablet. You know, when the kids knock over your morning coffee or you accidentally drop the tablet into a puddle or the kitchen sink.

At last week’s All Things Digital conference in Southern California, Sony CEO Kaz Hirai suggested another possibility — that someone might spill beer on it. After all, Sony might rent the 10 inch tablets to fans at Levi’s Stadium, the Santa Clara-based future home of the San Francisco 49ers.

Tablet Z is water resistant not waterproof, an important distinction. Though Sony invites you to bring the Z to the pool or the beach, you presumably wouldn’t want to drop it in salt water or a swimming pool full of chlorine. The only claim Sony is making is that the machine is water resistant up to 3 feet for up to 30 minutes. You must also ensure that the flaps protecting the ports and connectors are firmly closed, lest moisture seep in and mess everything up.xc5CGsdh

Keep in mind also that despite my bringing it into the shower, you’re not really meant to use it that way. As water pounded the display, the multi-touch screen jumped from one app to the next, rendering it pretty much unusable. But once I towel-dried the tablet, complete order was restored.

If water resistance were the only feature Sony had going with 8 inch tablet, I’d advise you to look elsewhere.Fortunately, Sony has designed an Android tablet with other benefits, even if it is costly and hardly perfect: It starts at $499.99 for a black model with 16GB of storage, or $599.99 for a black or white 32GB version. All U.S. models are Wi-Fi only.

Intel Corp is ramping up its efforts to have more of its chips used in mobile devices, a market it was initially slow to respond to, as officials said on Monday they expect more than 30 tablets using its processors hitting the market this year. Samsung Electronics Co announced on June 4 it will use Intel's processors to power a new version of one of its top-tier Android tablets for sale, while Asustek Computer Inc also showcased tablet and phablet designs using Intel chips. Both moves are considered a breakthrough for the US chipmaker.

"We're seeing some really great momentum in our customers. We got over 30 tablet designs already on, across Android and Windows, and we expect to have them for the holidays," Gregory Bryant, Intel's Asia Pacific vice president and general manager said in an interview on Tuesday at the Computex trade show in Taiwan.
